Last September, dear Eddie M. revealed a brand new Twin/Triplex-Spitfire being (secretly) built from Spitfires Mk 2,
See
http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,16989.0.html
The prototype of this Spitfire Mk 38, not finished today, will feature a middle wing, tricycle landing gear, main landing gears in the booms, enlarged tail, modern double-wheels.
Here I just present some 1944 drawing steps that may have inspired Eddie: 38-0 like a P-82 with pod, 38-1 triplex engine, 38-2 like a low-wing P-38.
What day is it today? April 1st, 1944, why?

I like the looks of those aircraft! Now all I need is 3 more Spitfires to start again!

The Northrop P-61 needed deep improvement in 1943. The USAF required:
- 2 bigger radar, facing fore and aft
- panoramic canopies, facing fore and aft
- only 2 engines and minimum weight increase
This seemed impossible. Then, the asymmetric Bv 141 was reported, and that created the project P-61-141:

The Messerschmitt Bf 110, Me 210, Me 410 are well known. The Me 310, Me 510 are less known. But the rest of the family is completely unknown. Here it is, with top secret drawings from MyMind Archives:
- asymmetric: Me 610 (single engine) and Me 710 (twin engine with rear canopy)
- twin-fuselage: Me 810 = Me 410Z Zwilling (triplex engine)
- twin-boom with rear canopy: Me 910 (twin engine with rear canopy)

I spent last year faking photographs, as a new hobby.
A few results match this topic:
- XF7F-11 TigerCatamaran
- F6F-11 Twin-Hellcat
- XP-51ATM Actual-Twin-Mustang
- P-51DM Double-Mustang
- T-6Z Harvavard
- C-47Z Twin-Skytrain
- P-82BD Single-Bubble Twin-Mustang
(and several others, imperfectly: Double-Vampire, Twin-Twin-Mustang,
F-82S³E, P-51Z³, P-38Z³)

After the Me 910, there was a follow on, of course.
- Me 1010 = Me 510Z (close to Me 810 like Me 510 is close to Me 410)
- Me 1110 : not used because the Me P.1110 was very different
(see
http://www.luft46.com/mess/mep1110j.html
)
- Me 1210 = Me 610Z
- Me 1410 = Me 710Z
- Me 1610 = Me 810Z = Me 410Z²
- Me 1810 = Me 910Z

Of course, the late Me x10 family was odd also, asymmetric:
Me 1310 = 610+710
Me 1510 = 610+910
Me 1710 = 810+910

The Mk 38 Design 1 had a problem : 3 propellers rotating in the same direction create a huge torque. This has been cured on the Design 1' with a tailplane asymmetry, and that provided clearance for a rear post:
