the markings are nice, 96 sqn i believe.

 Thumbs Up geoff Thumbs Up
Yes Trev it 96 Sqdn from one of the modeldecal Night fighter meteor sheets.

I did look for the 46 Sqdn markings to tie in with RP1's ecellent profile but didn't have the right sheet, plus the meteors didn't have the tail marking as shown on the artwork.

In choosing squadrons i try to go a bit off the beaten track by looking for units that operated the similar types the project aircraft was meant to replace but were not taken up by the eventual replacement.

(Thus when Colin asked for SIG advice on the P177's last year we suggested former Hunter units that didn't go to lightnings but either disbanded or ended up on bloodhounds. The same went for the Navy by suggesting the Scimitar units rather than going for the more obvious Sea Vixen ones  !)

The AW169 is armed with Red Deans, now in theory these should really be Red Hebe as the De havilland weapon replaced the Vickers ones, however after getting the John Forbat book on Vickers Missile projects i found drawings of the propossed Red Dean MK1 operational version. The Red Deans previously modelled have all been based upon the VT4 prototypes that can still be found in some museums and not the more refined operational one.

Cheers

That was just one of a large number Geoff built over the last few years. He has gone back to his modelling roots and is now scratch building ships again.

I hadn't seen this build before, and it's gorgeous. Wub I've wanted to try building the Aw169 since I saw it in BSP Fighters, but I don't think I'd be able to come close to this.

Well its been a few years since the AW169 was built, it wasnt that hard to scratch build, although a fair number of kits donated parts to create it.
The model is now safely enclosed in the Armstrong Whitworth Cabinet next to the original wooden display model illustrated in BSP:Fighters at the Midland Air Museum Coventry. (The What-If SIG also have a cabinet there maintained by OGL Martin H)

The FD-3 is a bit tatty now after the display circuit, although there should be photos on the site. Overscan actually discovered the original brochures in the PRO for most of the F.155T contenders which were a goldmine for the AW169 build, but highlighted a few major flaws with the FD-3 build - must get round one day to giving it another go and do it correctly.

Cheers

Hope you didn't think I didn't like the AW169, it's lovely - very well done.  I must confess that, ever since I bought the Secret Projects Jet Fighters book the FD3 has struck me as being a particularly good looking jet.  It's the artwork on the dust jacket, I know.  I'm sure that if the beast had been built it'd have been a firm favourite amongst moodellers.   Grin Grin
