A lend-lease program with the United States during the Korean War resulted in the "Canadianization" of the AD-6 variant of the Skyraider into a Search and Rescue version complete with hinged, dual fuselage doors to accept ambulatory litters and an aft-facing cockpit addition for the Observer. The rear cabin area, formerly occupied by an AEW crew of 2 or 3, was gutted to provide an ample medical bay which could accept up to three casualties and their attending air-medic. These specialized craft were in service from 1951 through 1959, mainly in the north-eastern maritime region of Canada.
