Image Submissions

Recently, we have been receiving images that have been named in a manner that is not HTML/UNIX compatible. Any instructor teaching web publishing will tell you the same. The proper way of naming files for online use, especially for images, is as follows:

  1. The ENTIRE FILENAME has to be typed in smallcaps.
  2. Do not use symbols, such as hash marks, quotation marks, exclamations, i.e. ~ ! @ # $ % ^ , " ; : and so forth. Theoretically the dash (-) and underscore (_) are usable, but optimally a filename that consists completely of alphanumeric characters is best.
  3. Do NOT, under ANY circumstances, use SPACES. Certain browsers will not recognize the space and the files will not be accessed by the browser as a result.
  4. Below are a list of acceptable filenames:
  • tomcat.jpg NOT Tomcat.jpg or TomCat.jpg
  • flyingtigers.htm NOT Flying Tigers.htm or FlyingTigers.htm
  • hornetandtomcat.jpg NOT Hornet & Tomcat.jpg or hornet&tomcat.jpg

If you have any questions concerning naming of filenames, please contact Tom before sending the files over.

Why am I asking that you do this? I wasted almost an hour in a previous update renaming the files. Every file had one of these "transgressions" and was very frustrating to correct, rename, delete, track and double-check. If I receive more files in this manner, I will merely ask you to resend the images. I will not rename these files as it results in more effort that I am not willing to expend.
