The Alternative RAF and RAAF
By Ralph Morton

The following fictional 1975 UK forces ORBAT (Order of Battle) shows my "dream" RAF and other UK forces.

I enjoy doing these fictional ORBATs and have a number of alternative strands, mainly based on the 60's when there were some really hairy projects, e.g.:

VSTOL projects for the US and German Air Forces

B-70 Valkyrie in-service schemes (in a book on the B-58 Hustler there is mention that the USAF planned to send a Hustler to Vietnam as a pathfinder and that one a/c might actually have been painted in B-52D Vietnam colours. By extension some early B70 models might have been used in the raids on Vietnam authorised by Nixon in 1972)

Vietnam is a good hunting ground for alternative schemes. Had the Conservatives won the UK elections in 1964 and 1966 they might have joined Australia and New Zealand in sending a Commonwealth force to Vietnam. Either RAF TSR.2's or F-111Ks as well as RN Buccaneers and RAF Vulcans and Canberras would be featured. Speaking of the F-111K, I have grown fonder of this aircraft (as a TSR.2 fan it was always the "bad guy") since reading how the USAF and RAAF turned their F111-s into decent planes. Another What-if is the F111-B. Maybe if the UK and Australia had bought into the F-111 programme earlier and helped make it work, versions of this plane (and the wonderful Phoenix missile) could have flown from joint RN/RAN developed versions of CVA-01. HMS Australia or HMS Melbourne 2 would have made a fine third of class ship to follow "Queen Elizabeth" and "Duke of Edinburgh" (or "Furious" and "Ark Royal") into service in the 70's.

Well, enough day dreaming and back to the paperwork.....
